3 Story Description
The Monkey King
  • Wants to be a god and hang out with the other gods; but they do not want him because he is a monkey
  • Monkey studies 12 disciplines to become immortal
  • Tze-Yo-Tzuh (creator of all things) seeks out monkey king to convince him to be his original self - a monkey
  • Monkey King denies; tries to fight the creator; gets buried under a pile of rocks for 500 years
  • He later becomes a disciple to a man who was chosen by the creator to go about a mission to collect the three disciples
Jin
  • His parents came to America for a better life
  • Finds friendship in Wei-Chen Sun (a Taiwanese transfer)
  • Jin tells his friend about his love for the American Amelia Harris
  • They go on a date; everything is fine until another guy tells Jin to leave Amelia alone
  • Jin kisses Wei-Chen Sun’s girlfriend Suzy; they stop being friends
  • Jin dreams of this old herbalist who asks him who he really wants to be
  • He wakes up looking exactly like the guy who Amelia likes: white, with blonde curly hair
  • Gives himself a new name: Danny
Danny and Chin-Kee

  • Secretly Jin, but we do not know until toward the end of the story
  • Just fitting into the crowd until his cousin Chin-Kee comes to visit
  • Chin-Kee is the stereotypical Chinese guy and is SUPER EMBARRASSING
  • He makes Danny’s life terrible: pees in a jock’s Coke (who Danny is trying to be friends with), shouts all the right answers in class, and hits on Danny’s girlfriend/crush
  • Danny tries to fight Chin-Kee, only to find out that he is a master in Kung Fu; aka the Monkey King
  • He comes annually to keep an eye on Wei-Chen Sun, who is actually his son; sent as a “test of virtue” to live with humans and be free of vice

Learning Letter

This course definitely set me up with a lot of positive resources for my future classroom that I am grateful for. I believe that I did very well in the text presentations. I wish that I would have made them a little more creative, (considering they were all powerpoint slides) but I am very pleased with how I did. My favorite presentation that I did was the "The Book Whisperer." I loved this presentation so much solely because the book was INCREDIBLE. It taught me basically everything I need to know, need to prepare for, and different activities to get my students to love reading. It is a book that I will always keep in my classroom. Some of the discussions that I remember enjoying a lot were over graphic novels. I loved going to the library with the class and looking over different graphic novels together and how they are just as beneficial as other novels. I believe that I grew a lot in this class.
